As the height of summer begins to soften, I find myself welcoming the slower rhythm that this season naturally invites.

Even if life doesn't necessarily feel slower, there's a subtle shift happening around us. The sun still shines brightly, but the days are becoming just a little shorter. Gardens are overflowing with abundance. Mornings and evenings begin to cool. There is a quiet reminder that change is coming.

For many of us, autumn brings renewed schedules, routines, and structure. Late Summer gives us the opportunity to pause before that transition—to slow down, nourish ourselves, and prepare for the season ahead.

I think that's what I love most about this time of year.

We still get to enjoy the long days, warm evenings, and spontaneous adventures of summer, but the heat of the afternoon gently reminds us to rest. Nature itself encourages us to move a little slower, stay hydrated, seek shade, and appreciate moments of stillness.

In Chinese Medicine, this period is recognized as its own unique season and is associated with the Earth Element.

The Earth Element: Finding Your Center

The Earth Element represents nourishment, stability, digestion, and coming home to yourself.

Unlike the other elements, which correspond to one primary season, Earth exists as the transition between seasons. It reminds us that before we move into something new, we first need time to integrate where we've been.

Late Summer is the season of digestion—not only of the food we eat, but also of our experiences, emotions, relationships, and lessons.

It's an invitation to ask:

  • What has this year taught me so far?
  • What am I ready to carry forward?
  • What no longer serves me?
  • How can I nourish myself more deeply?

Just as the earth gathers and ripens the harvest, we, too, have an opportunity to gather the wisdom we've cultivated before moving into autumn.

Caring for Your Earth Element

In Chinese Medicine, the Earth Element is closely connected to the Spleen and Stomach, the organ systems responsible for transforming food into energy and supporting healthy digestion.

When we care for digestion during Late Summer, we're also helping strengthen our resilience and immunity as we move into the colder months.

Some gentle ways to support your Earth Element include:

  • Eat warm, cooked meals like roasted, steamed, sautéed, or grilled vegetables.
  • Prioritize foods that nourish the Spleen and Stomach.
  • Cook with warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and turmeric.
  • Enjoy seasonal fruits while limiting overly cold or acidic foods.
  • Choose naturally nourishing foods like squash, sweet potatoes, corn, rice, chickpeas, fish, beef, and other grounding meals.
  • Eat meals consistently and avoid skipping breakfast or lunch whenever possible.
  • Limit foods that feel difficult for your digestion, especially excessive dairy (goat dairy is often easier to digest for many people).
  • Create moments of mindfulness through meditation, Qi Gong, Tai Ji, yoga, journaling, or simply spending time outdoors.

Healing Happens in the Pause

Our culture often celebrates constant productivity, but nature teaches us something different.

Every season has a purpose.

Late Summer reminds us that growth doesn't always come from doing more. Sometimes it comes from slowing down long enough to receive the nourishment we've already been given.

By supporting your digestion, honoring your body's need for rest, and embracing this season of transition, you're laying the foundation for greater health, resilience, and vitality in the months ahead.
